The Gatsby Benchmarks
The Gatsby Benchmarks provide the framework for our careers programme. They describe eight areas of effective careers provision and help us ensure that students receive a coherent and progressive programme from Year 7 to Year 13.
The eight benchmarks cover a stable careers programme; career and labour market information; the needs of each student; curriculum links to careers; encounters with employers and employees; experiences of workplaces; encounters with further and higher education; and personal guidance.
How we evaluate our programme
We review the careers programme regularly to ensure it meets students’ needs and supports successful progression. Evaluation includes:
- Compass and Compass+ evaluations against the Gatsby Benchmarks.
- Feedback from all stakeholders.
- Participation in careers activities and personal guidance.
- Work-experience evaluations.
- Career-readiness, intended-destination and application information.
- Year 11 and Year 13 destination data.
- Review of individual events and activities.
- Review by senior leaders and governors.
Findings are used to identify gaps, target support and improve the programme for the following academic year.

Destination information
One measure of the effectiveness of a careers programme is how well prepared students are for their next stage. We use destination information to understand the routes taken by students after Years 11 and 13, including further and higher education, apprenticeships, training and employment. Published destination measures for Wigston Academy and Wigston College are available through the Department for Education.
